The department of economics established in the year of 1963. The department is running graduate courses in B.A &B.Com. In the jurisdiction of Karnataka university Dharwad. The department has qualified & experienced staff having high teaching & research profile. From 2005 to 2006 on words semester systems is introduced & 2020-2021 CBCS systems also introduced.

• The department of economics is one of the oldest & vast departments in social science subject in our college.
• The department has played its role creditably as a centre of qualitative teaching and research project.
• It has a list of alumni who have distinguished themselves in the field of education, administration and other public service in Karnataka.
• Reputed professor like Dr. M HALAIAH (former principal of the college and the author), Prof. K D BASAVA (A renowned writer and authored many number of books), Prof. G I SHETTAR (former coordinator of the society), Prof .R NATARAJ (former principal, coordinator of the society & NAAC peer team member) were once the faculty of this department.
• Initially economics was the major subject for arts stream and now it is an optional subject due to change in university syllabus & it is compulsory subject for the commerce stream.
• The performance of the students have been stellar both in higher education, and placed well, many of our students have got admitted to M.A programme in Economics. Presently our department has three qualified and well experienced teaching staff members Prof B.M. Mallikarjunappa is the present Head of the Department.

• To avail global knowledge of higher education in economics to rural masses and local community.
• To provide educational facilities to the students of downtrodden, deprived and backward classes of the society.
• To prepare the students for further studies in economics.
• To promote research attitude and ICT based teaching learning process among faculty and students.
• To enable the students to accept the challenges of the world economy.
• To inculcate values of social equality, secularism and national integration among the students.

Department of economics should be known to imparting quality higher education to rural and socio-economically deprived sections of the society viewing national and global necessities because of the changing and evolving economy.
